The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Loved dogs and coursing

Paddy Joe O’Donoghue, Cummer,

THE peaceful death took place at Kerry University Hospital of Paddy Joe O’Donoghue, of Cummer, Knocknagoshel on Wednesday February 8, surrounded by his loving family.

Paddy Joe was pre-deceased by his brother Denis, and sisters Mary-Ita and Norrie. He would have reached his 82nd birthday on March 1st last.

Born in 1935 to parents Charles and Ellen O’ Donoghue, he attended the local national school and completed his education at 14 years of age to help his father on the family farm. He soon developed his love of Coursing and Track Racing, and with his new found interest, travelled to numerous coursing and track meetings throughout the county.

Distance was no object to Paddy, and Shelbourne Park in Dublin was a regular port of call to him. Here, his dogs made record selling prices, topping the sales on 3 consequtive years there during the late 70s and early 80s.

Paddy enjoyed his dogs , but also found time to call to his neighbours and friends at local dances and carnivals which were then very popular throughout North Kerry and West Limerick. He enjoyed a sociable drink, catching up on local news, and was willing at any time to help his neighbours when called upon.

He was very active and outgoing, and his interest in local politics saw him taking the task of Chairman and Secretary of the local Fianna Fail Cumann for a few years.

He will be sadly missed by his sisters Eily, (Cummer), Peggy (Keane, Mein, Knocknagoshel), and Kathleen Murphy, Washington DC, USA, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, brothers-in law, relatives, wonderful neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

His Month’s Mind Mass will take place on Monday, March 20, in St Mary’s Church, Knocknagoshel at 8pm.
