Frewen crown for Pobalscoil

FREWEN CUP FINAL

WHILE six points might suggest a degree of comfort, there was very little between both sides in last Wednesday’s Frewen Cup Final played at Fitzgerald Stadium.

A 43rd minute goal from Pobalscoil centre-forward Cillian Ó Failbhe, punishing a bad defensive mix-up by The Sem turned the tie in the West Kerry School’s favour after their Killarney opponents had led by 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time.

Pobalscoil had more of the play in the first-half even if the scoreboard didn’t show it, Barry Keane’s accuracy from frees along with Sem goalkeeper Marc Kelliher and defender Gary O’Connor preventing Pobalscoil finding the net on two occasions keeping the Sem in front at the break.

Pobalscoil went ahead for the first time after the break however as Deividas Uosis and Colm Ó Muircheartaigh proved to be crucial to their eventual win with their performances on the day.

Midfielder Paul O’Shea impressed for the Sem in their defeat and he was unlucky not to grab a goal for them near the end, missing out on two occasions in quick succession after combining with Darragh Donohoe.

Speaking after the Frewen Cup success, Eamon Fitzmaurice spoke of his delight at the school’s success.

“We’ve been together since First Year, they are a great bunch of lads and while they’ve got to a good share of finals, they’ve lost out to the Sem and the Green along the way so it’s nice to get a reward like this.

“I felt with how evenly matched both sides were a goal was also going to be crucial and thankfully it came for us on the day. The All-Ireland Series is a great bonus but winning the Frewen in its own right is something to be proud of,” the Pobalscoil boss said.
