The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Peggy’s passion and love for life was greatly admired by all

- THE Late Peggy Conway.

PEGGY Conway (Nee Buckley), 5 Cahills Park, Tralee passed away peacefully on March 5 during a respite stay at Abbeydorney Nursing Home.

She was born on October 11, 1928 to her parents Jack & Ann Buckley whom she loved so dearly. She was formerly of Connor’s Lane and Old Mitchells Crescent, Tralee.

She was one of 10 siblings, three girls and seven boys, all of whom have predeceased her. She grew up in Tralee and attended school in Moyderwell.

In later years, she met her husband Michael at a dance in Tralee and from there began their lifetime of love and friendship. They were married in Ealing, Broadway in England in 1949. There, they welcomed their first child, their son Johnny.

Having returned home to Ireland about one year later, they soon set up home at 5 Cahills Park and they welcomed three more children, their daughters Ann, Eileen and Phil. Sadly, Peggy lost her son Johnny in 2002 which left her heartbroken.

Cahills Park in Strand Road has been home to Peggy for the last 65 years and, throughout that time, Peggy never lost the deep fondness she always held for Boherbee.

When Peggy’s children were teenagers, she rejoined the workforce. She secured employment in The Brandon Hotel for many years and thereafter, in Kerry Fashions.

She, on so many occasions over the years, recalled the most treasured memories she had of so many wonderful times in her working career with her many friends and the laughs and good times they shared together.

Peggy had a tremendous sense of fashion and style. She loved to walk, to bake and socialise and had a wonderful sense of humour. Over the years, she could be seen with her husband in The Bridge Inn and then onwards to The Strand Road Club where she was known to have sung a song or two and that she did so well over the years, as it always brought her so much joy to sing a song with her husband, family and friends by her side.

In later years, Peggy was a regular commuter on The Tralee People’s Bus. This provided a wonderful sense of independence for her and allowed her to regularly meet her friends on board. She enjoyed going about the town she loved or would have happily sat on board for hours chatting to her friends.

Peggy loved to pray and prayer was such an important part of her life. She was so deeply devoted to her faith and prayed to many Saints.

She had for many years attended the Holy Hour in the Bon Secours Chapel each Wednesday which she dearly loved and enjoyed.

Peggy was married to her husband Michael for 67 years in December 2016. They had a wonderful and happy life together of love and friendship.

She loved her family, 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and they too loved her dearly for she was a pleasure to be around as she truly loved life.

Peggy had wonderful neighbours and friends who were tremendously supportive and kind to her when she needed them.

Peggy had – and to quote her – ‘a great life’, filled with many wonderful memories, together with her husband, family and friends.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband Michael, her three daughters, Ann, Eileen and Phil, her daughterin-law Sheila, her son-in-laws Pat and Derry, her 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, extended family and friends and she will be so dearly missed by all.

Peggy’s Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated on April 4 at 7.30 p.m. in St John’s Church (side chapel), Castle Street, Tralee.
