Cougars U16 boys complete League and Plate double

THE sports Complex Tralee saw the Tigers hosting the Cougars and the win secured the league title as an impressive Cougars produced another strong team performanc­e.

This was Cougars first ever season in the Boys U-16 competitio­n and it’s been a great season with the team going unbeaten since December which has seen them complete the Kerry League and Plate double. David Bartlett was in top form for the Cougars as they raced into an early first quarter lead 19-6 and they were comfortabl­e throughout the game with brothers Eoin Talbot and Colm Talbot dominating on the boards throughout. Tigers had good performanc­es by Dan Walker and Chris Nolan tried best for Coach Dave Falvey side but wasn’t enough to deny Cougars the title and Well done to Cougars Coach Patrick O’Regan.

GIRLS U-16 DIVISION 2

COUGARS hosted the Ravens at the Pres Gym and after a slow start the home side took control to take the points with Cougars Shelly Clifford in fine scoring form. Rathmore’s Ava Kelliher and Katie Buckley opened the scoring with four points each to give the early lead to Rathmore but Cougars finished the quarter very well to lead by two 12-10 with Clifford on target with 10 points.

Cougars pushed on in the second quarter with Niamh O’Connor, Alison Flynn, Holly Clifford and Clodagh Jordan all adding good scores to give Cougars a commanding lead 32-18 half time lead.

Cougars held this lead throughout the second half despite a good showing from Rathmore’s Ava Kelliher who finished with 18 points and Katie Buckley 12 points with the impressive Shelly Clifford finishing as top scorer on 29 points.

U-12 GIRLS DIVISION 3

THE league leaders Cobras welcomed the Cougars to Causeway Comprehens­ive Gym on Thursday last and the top of the table clash didn’t disappoint as the game needed double period of overtime before Cobras secured the points in a very exciting game.

Cobras dominated the early exchanges with Sarah O’Sullivan strong in defence and Emma Conway on target with all her sides’ points to lead 12-8 with Olivia Gaffey responding well for Cougars with 6 points. Cougars had a great second half to tie the game at half time 18-18 thanks to Aimee Coffey adding six points. Cougars good spell continued as they pushed ahead to lead 26-22 entering the final quarter. The final quarter was end to end with both sides going for the win with Edel Horgan giving Cougars the lead with time almost up the Cobras scored on the buzzer with Emma Conway scoring a great basket from the three point range to take the game to overtime. Scores were hard to come by as both sides were tired in overtime but Conway was again the hero in the last few seconds of the second period of overtime she coolly made two from the free throw-line to win the game for the Cobras in a thrilling finish with Conway the games top scorer with an impressive 24 points. The sides meet again on Thursday in a potential league deciding game.
