Weeks of road chaos in Tralee

THREE WEEKS OF MAJOR DISRUPTION DURING NEXT PHASE OF ROADWORKS

- By SIMON BROUDER

KERRY County Council has admitted the next phase of the Tralee town centre traffic plan will cause three weeks of severe disruption for motorists.

Works to restore two way traffic on Denny Street are continuing with work on the street now due to be complete by May 22, three weeks later than originally scheduled.

Despite the delays on Denny Street – where no work took place last week – contractors Craddocks Engineering are to press ahead with work to semi pedestrianise the Mall from May 2.

As a result, for the next three weeks The Mall will be closed to all traffic while Denny Street will remain a one way road.

This arrangement, which senior council staff previously admitted would cause serious traffic disruption, was only due to be in place for one week but the delays on Denny Street meant the timeframe had to be extended considerably to allow The Mall Works proceed. As is stands work on The Mall, which was due to start last Monday, has already been delayed by a week.

Kerry County Council has apologised for the impending disruption, which one senior staff member acknowledged will probably cause major traffic delays.

The same council official said the final week of the works on Denny Street – from May 15 to 22 – when the street is due to be completely resurfaced will be particularly difficult.

During the three-week period diversions will be put in place and provisions will be made to ensure ease of access to the area for pedestrians.

Taxis will be relocated to Abbey Court and deliveries to The Mall will take place via Tralee Town Square. Details of all these arrangements are printed in the adjacent article.

From Monday, May 22, twoway traffic will commence on Denny Street and traffic will be able to turn from Princes Street, onto Ivy Terrace and travel up Denny Street and onto Castle Street and Ashe Street.
