Scholarly tribute to Mons Ó Fiannachta
BHÍ an-deireadh seachtaine ag Léachtaí Cholm Cille na bliana seo sa Díseart Dé hAoine 21 agus Dé Sathairn 22 Aibreán. An Moins. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta a bhí faoi chaibidil na léachtaí agus gnéithe difriúla dá shaol agus dá shaothar á gcíoradh.
LCC took place in An Diseart over the weekend. The gathering of scholars discussed the life and work of Mons Padraig Ó Fiannachta. From his Corca Dhuibhne heritage to his courageous work in translating the Bible. Cathal Ó Hainlé described the enormity of the task, which was slow until the Monsignor came along with his “little red hen approach” and personally undertook the mammoth task.
His catalogue of the manuscripts in Maynooth has provided improved access to the content of over 300 Gaelic manuscripts held in the collection, the earliest of which dates from the 15th Century.
A powerful description of the Monsignor’s life as a poet was presented by Bríd Ní Mhoráin, whose books of poetry were published by An Sagart, the publishing company established by Mons Ó Fiannachta.
Other speakers included Máire Herbert, Head of Scoil Léann Na Gaeilge Early and Medieval Irish at University College Cork, Dr. Eoin Grogan, Department of Early Irish at Ollscoil Maigh Nuadh
Dr. Tracey Ní Mhaonaigh, organiser of the event, expressed her thanks to all the speakers and all who had taken part.
Rinne Raidió na Gaeltachta na léachtaí a thaifeadadh agus craolfar iad go luath. Chomh maith leis sin, cuirfear leagan clóite de na léachtaí ar fáil an bhliain seo chugainn.
Mons Padraig ó Fiannachta died in in Dingle Community Hospital in July 2016.
