CBS NS looking to the future with high quality education

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

THE iconic red-brick building of Scoil Mhuire na mBraithre, CBS Primary School, located at Fairies Cross in Tralee, has become as important a symbol of the town as the high quality education that it has provided since it first opened at the site back in 1959.

Much has changed about the school since then of course – rooms have been added and upgraded, countless hard-working teachers have passed through the halls and generations of pupils have received their all-important education. What has not changed, however, is the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff in providing the best quality education possible for the young minds coming through their doors.

This is clear to see when you take a look at the extensive school brochure on offer from the reception; they offer an after school club for Junior and Senior Infants from 1.302.30pm, a fully stocked school library in which each child has their own bar-code, a set of iPads for each class and a breakfast club that operates four-days-a-week and which provides cereal and toast to children before the start of school.

It’s a welcome return to the school for this writer again, having spent two of my teaching practices here, teaching both third class and sixth class respectively, and it’s a measure of the welcoming and friendly environment within the school that even after six years since those teaching practices, I am still stopped and asked how I am getting on before they wish me well for the future. Ever a hive of activity, the school is a bastion of the newest and most progressive educational programmes and policies, each designed to create a safe and positive learning environment to allow the pupils to reach their full potential. Junior and Senior Infants in the school are able to develop their fine motor skills through structured play and their proficiency in early literacy and numeracy skills is promoted through initiatives such as ‘Maths 4 Fun’ and the Literacy Lift Off programme. Senior classes in the school, when they are not being offered the chance to learn a European Language, are taking part in a buddy system with the younger classes through which they take part in a number of paired activities such as School Mass, Teddy Bear’s Picnic and reading activities. If anyone is thinking of sending their child or children to the school, staff there are more happy to facilitate either a tour of the school or brochure - all they have to do is make a reservation with the school.
