UCC OPENS NEW OUTREACH CAMPUS RESEARCH CENTRE IN SOUTH KERRY
UNIVERSITY College Cork has opened a new satellite research campus in Cahersiveen.
The new Skellig Centre for Research and Innovation was opened thanks to a combined effort on the part of UCC, Kerry County Council and the South Development Partnership.
The centre aims to provide locally-based access to higher education and research opportunities with the long-term aim of boosting employment and sustainable economic development in the Iveragh region.
The satellite campus will offer a space for various higher educational institutions – not just UCC – to deliver education programmes and carry out research and fieldwork.
Based at the Cahersiveen Library building, Skellig CRI will be managed by UCC’s Adult and Community Education Officer Clíodhna O’Callaghan.
Already four locally based PhD candidates have begun using the centre to carry out their research and it is expected many more will join them in the coming months.
“Skellig CRI promotes local level collaboration with national and international research communities, replicating in a local context the impact of a third level institution on a community,” said Clíodhna O’Callaghan.
“It is a space that fosters collaboration, community building, and a higher education research and entrepreneurial spirit,” she said.
“The new centre will build on the momentum built during a recent series of workshops and research conducted by the Institute without Boundaries from Canada in south Kerry,” said Clíodhna O’Callaghan.
