Shane raises big flag at Dromclough

-

KERRY’S Shane Enright caused quite the stir among the pupils of Dromclough National School when he visited to help raise the school’s new Active School Flag.

It’s the sporting version of the better-known Green Flag and is given only on a school achieving excellence in all things physical -exercise related.

And that was certainly the case in Dromclough where pupils and staff have been working their sport socks off over the last two years to encourage an even greater range of activities in the school.

“It gives children an opportunity to develop a love for sport and living a healthy lifestyle as they are encouraged to take part in a minimum of 60 minutes physical activity per day,” Principal Mary O’Connor said.

“Establishing links and partnerships with other supportive groups, clubs and agencies that cater for physical education provision is also a key feature of the project,” Ms O’Connor added.

The ceremony brought a close to Active School Week – five spell-binding days in the school year in which books were given a back seat as activities such as soccer, orienteering trails, long-puck competitions, taster workshops, circuit training and the annual ‘Sports-forAll day took centre stage.

This year, the highlight for many of the children was the eagerly anticipated Teachers vs Students Fun Soccer Challenge.

It saw the brave students of sixth class togging out against their teachers and putting it up to them in the true Kerry spirit to ultimately win the day on a very impressive scoreline of 3-nil!

Active School Flag Co-ordinator Kevin Enright spoke in detail about the successful campaign they embarked on to achieve an Active School status on Shane Enright’s big visit.

He paid tribute to the strong team they have in Dromclough under Ms O’Connor and warmly welcomed Kerry’s Shane Enright to the school - before the Tarbert player hoisted the new flag on high about Dromclough to the delight of everyone.
