The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Cycle to raise funds for Kerry legend John Egan memorial

-

HE broke on the scene in a big way in 1975 when he scored a memorable early goal versus Dublin in the All-Ireland senior football final of that year and, since that memorable first All-Ireland senior medal, he went on to be one of the all-time greats of the game.

The legendary John Egan from Sneem very sadly passed away at a relatively young age a number of years ago.

As a tribute to the man who gave so much joy to Kerry football fans from the years 1975-84, the Sneem community are in the process of erecting a perpetual memorial to him in the village centre.

A cycle for the purpose of raising funds for this endeavour will take place in Sneem and its environs on Saturday, May 13. Cyclists should convene and register at the Sneem Hotel between 8am and 10am as the cycle will start at 10.15am.

There will be no registration fee but all cyclists are invited to make a donation on the day to help cover the cost of John’s memorial. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Sneem Hotel.

There will be three cycle routes from which to choose: 65k (Sneem-Kenmare-Moll’s Gap- Sneem); 30k (Sneem-Blackwater Bridge-Blackwater Tavern-Sneem); 20k (Sneem-Tahilla Church- Gortagown-Sneem).

All routes will pass by John Egan’s childhood home in Tahilla. There will also be a family cycle route passing the Sneem GAA field.
