Currow kids swap books for fresh air
CURROW-BASED Scoil Mhuire agus Naomh Treasa catered for all age groups and abilities this week as it staged another hugely successful “Reader-to-Runner Walk and Run” this week, attracting over 175 competitors and raising some €2,000 for the primary school.
Principal Margaret Hanafin explained that this was the fifth staging of the fund-raiser, and it came together on the back of support from members of An Ríocht Athletics Club and locally-based International Rugby Star Siobhán Fleming, who provided training beforehand. The school was also grateful for support it received in the line of sponsorship and volunteer work it received throughout.
Around 140 pupils took part, and were joined by men, women, moms, dads, nanas and grandas for the three-kilometre test laid out near the school.
“It’s called ‘Runner-to-Reader’ because the kids swap the books for running boots, but the whole community gets involved too to either run or walk the route. It caters for both the fun-runner and more competitive characters,” Margaret said.
“We had competitions for each class on the day, as well as senior competitions. Con Enright was fastest man, FIona Nellian-Maguire was fastest woman, Annie Brosnan was first mom home and Liam Dennehy was first dad. Husband-and-wife Connie and Margaret Dennehy won the grandparents’ category, while Julia Curtin and Ben Conway were our fastest students.
“We enjoyed refreshments afterwards, and we were delighted when we got an idea of what we raised, which will go towards painting our school,” Margaret added.
