THREE of the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol titles were decided on Wednesday last in Beaufort. The two, three and four/five-teacher school finals were played and we were treated to some top class football.

The first final of the afternoon was a repeat of last year’s decider featuring Glenbeigh and St. Finian’s Waterville with the Waterville girls going in search of the three in a row.

In the 3-Teacher final Scoil Mhuire, Knocknagashel appearing in their first ever girls decider faced the girls from Scoil Réalt na Mara, Tousist who have a long and indeed proud record in Allianz Cumann na mBunscol competitions.

In the 2-Teacher final we had Scoil An Ghleanna, Baile an Sceilg facing Scoil an Ghleanna, An Daingean.

4/5-TEACHER FINAL

THE 2016 Allianz Cumann na mBunscol champions, St Finian’s started well and Aoife O’Dwyer opened the scoring with a well taken point, following a great save by Glenbeigh goalkeeper Cara Moriarty who was in outstanding form in this game and denied Waterville on numerous occasions. Glenbeigh settled into the game and had points from Abbie Sheahan, Roisin Smith and Aoife Page, and a fantastic individual goal from Lea Morris when she burst through the Waterville defence and sent an unstoppable shot to the net. Leanne O’Sullivan and Aoife O’Dwyer replied for st. Finian’s to leave the half time score Glenbeigh 1-4 St Finian’s 0-3.

St Finians began second half in determined fashion and won their share of possession but due to some excellent defending by Hollie Clifford, Roisin Smith and Seodhla O Donavan they were limited to points from Lauren Curran and Leanne O’Sullivan. Glenbeigh had a great 10 minute spell and landed goals from Lea Morris, Danielle Griffin and Aoife Page to give them a 4-6 to 0-5 lead. St Finian’s never gave up and goals from Aoife Dwyer and Lauren Curran narrowed the gap. Danielle Griffin, who alongside Lea Morris had a great game at midfield closed the scoring with a well taken goal, to deny the Waterville girls a third Allianz Cumann na mBunscol title in a row and a well deserved and hard earned title for Glenbeigh on a final score Glenbeigh 5-7 St. Finian’s 2-6.

Grace then raced through the Tousist defence but her powerful effort for goal skimmed the cross bar for a fine individual point. Chloe Chremin who was having a excellent game at midfield slotted 1-1 before the break to see her school take a 5-2 to 0-3 interval lead. The second half was keenly contested with the Knocknagashel girls scoring 2-4 through Ciara and Grace Cahill for whom Orla Duncan, Robin Cahill and Ella Murphy were in sparkling form. SCOIL An Ghleanna, Baile an Sceilg got off to a great start in this encounter winning the lion’s share of possession and slotting an early goal from their most influential player Kiera Furey. However, thanks to some stout defending from Emma Ní Chonchúir and Kayle Getkate the Baile na Sceilge girls failed to make full use of the possession and the girls from the west gradually found their feet and penetrated the southerners rearguard for vital first half scores through Kayle Getkate, Aisling Furlong and Emma NÍ Chonchúir to lead 2-3 to 1-0 at the short whistle. Scoil an Ghleanna, An Daingean got off to a flying start in the second half to extend their lead but full credit to the Baile na Sceilg girls who fought all the way and cut their deficit to two goals on a final score of 5-0 to 4-9.
