BOOK LAUNCH

“The great famine in Tralee and North Kerry” is the title of a new book by Bryan Mac Mahon of Ballyheigue. It is published by Mercier Press and will be launched in O’Mahony’s Bookshop, Castle St, Tralee on Thursday 22 June at 5.30 pm. The guest speaker at the launch is Jimmy Deenihan. All are welcome.

Bryan MacMahon uncovers a great deal of new information about Famine times in all the towns and villages of North Kerry, and vividly describes the traumatic consequences of the failure of the potato crop. The book focuses on the human impact of the disaster and shines a spotlight on conditions in the workhouses of Tralee and Listowel. It includes the names of some of those who lost their lives in the social crisis which lasted seven years, from 1845 to 1852. The book also highlights the humanitarian work undertaken by many public figures, including the clergy of every parish who were at the forefront of relief efforts. The book will be for sale in bookshops. Further information is available from 087-6154239.
