OBITUARY

Margaret Ashe nee Ennis, Ashes Bar, Camp passed away peacefully on May 27th. in the loving care of The Ocean View Nursing Home, Camp. Margaret will always be remembered fondly in Camp for her generosity and wonderful entrepreneurial spirit.

Moving back with the family in the 1970’s to help run Ashes Bar in Camp, Margaret saw potential and business opportunities around every corner in a growing tourism industry in West Kerry at that time. One of her first business ventures was selling Ice Cream from the stable side of the bar. And in the field at the rear of the bar, Ashes provided an overnight stay for the horse drawn caravans making their way out into the peninsula.

And later when Traditional Music became popular, Margaret supported by her son Thomas started a Traditional music session on Sunday evenings attracting musicians from all over, even our Parish Priest Fr. Gerry Keane in his homily at her funeral mass recalls enjoying the sessions after travelling all the way from Listowel on many occasions.

Later on Margaret opened the first restaurant in Camp, succeeding in this venture too and Ashes Restaurant became a popular gourmet venue, rated highly amongst the best in the country. And to this day, far and wide when talking of Camp, mention of Ashes will often put Camp on the map of the world for many people ! Margaret was laid to rest in Ballinknockane Cemetary, Camp on Tuesday, May 30th. following requiem mass celebrated by Fr. Gerry Keane, PP. A guard of honour representative of all of the community attended. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis. Sympathy is extended to her husband Seamus, sons Thomas, James and Pádraig, daughter Marion, grandchildren, brothers Thomas and Pat, sister Clare, son-in-law Martin, daughterinAzita, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends. Her sons Oliver and John predeceased her.

PASSING OF DONALD CAIRD

It is with sadness that we learned of the death of Dr. Donald Caird, Former Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin and Glendalough. Dr Caird and his wife Nancy and family were regular visitors to their home in camp. The Caird family made many friends in Camp and Donald and Nancy enjoyed the weekly game of whist in the Old School whenever they were around. He had a great love of the Irish language and culture. He concelebrated Mass on The Blasket island in the summer of 2001 and was a frequent visitor to the Great Blasket Centre, attending the annual Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid on a regular basis down through the years. Sympathy is extended to his wife Nancy, son, John, daughters Ann and Helen, Grandchildren, extended family many relatives and friends.
