Presentation ‘looking to its past and future’
Secondary to get new building
JUST as it prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, Listowel Presentation Secondary was delivered a great birthday present this week with the announcement of up to €1 million in funding by the Department of Education that will finally see its old prefabs phased out for a new building comprising eight classrooms
“We’re looking back and looking forwards,” Principal Eileen Kennelly said this week in response to the great news and at a time as the school prepares for major publication in the next academic year celebrating the proud story of the secondary.
With a steering group set up to source material, the school is calling on all former pupils to get in touch with memorabilia.
“It’s 75 years since the foundation of the secondary school in Listowel and we’re appealing to all the women of North Kerry to have been educated there to unite in gathering information with a view to compiling as comprehensive a history as possible,” steering group member and past student Joanna Keane O’Flynn told The Kerryman.
The proudest traditions of the school are as strong as ever - a great academic record, a winning basketball programme, debating prowess and much, much, more.
Meanwhile, Kerry TD Brendan Griffin warmly welcomed the funding this week as ‘great news for a very progressive school with a growing student population.’ He recently visited the Pres, communicating its need to Minister Bruton.
The new development will see the prefabs replaced with a building comprising eight general classrooms and associated facilities - which students are set to access through a new pedestrian entrance in the near future.
