The Kerryman (North Kerry)

As you were with Glenbeigh and Crokes on top

DIVISION ONE

-

STILL the same at the top of the table as Dr Crokes and Glenbeigh/ Glencar continue to share the lead with the Killarney side overcoming the concession of two first half goals to Castleisland Desmonds before going on to record an 11-point victory in the end at Lewis Road. Kieran O’Leary scored a first half goal as Crokes went in leading by 1-11 to 2-6 at half-time. The first six points of the second half put the All-Ireland Senior Club champions back in control with a Gavin O’Shea goal sending them on their way to a 2-20 to 2-9 win as they get set for the first of two consecutive trips to Tralee in travelling to Strand Road this coming weekend.

Glenbeigh/Glencar gained a small degree of revenge over Templenoe for a loss to the Kenmare District side in their recent Intermediate quarter-final meeting by a narrow 0-12 to 0-11. The visitors had the better of the first period as Adrian Spillane appeared to have given them a three point lead at the break only for Kieran Doyle to bring the hosts back within two at 0-8 to 0-6 in favour of Templenoe at the break. Gavan O’Grady and Jason McKenna levelled the game after half-time and the match ebbed and flowed both ways but a high hanging effort from McKenna seemed to shift the match the home side’s way. Caoilm Teahan’s third point was the insurance score as a further point from Spillane proved on to be consolation despite the best efforts of Stephen O’Sullivan in a hard fought encounter.

Rathmore had a convincing win at home to Kerins O’Rahillys which featured the interesting move of Shane Ryan into goals by the East Kerry club. Aidan O’Mahony lined out at centre-back in Rathbeg and the hosts were always in control of an encounter they won by 2-13 to 0-5. Two goals inside the opening 13 minutes did a lot to give them that grip on the game as John Moynihan and Dean Fitzgerald found the back of the net in Rathmore leading by 2-7 to 0-4 at the break. John Ferguson did his best for the visitors but Gearoid Dillane kicked Strand Road’s only second half point in a bad 14 point loss for the Tralee side.

Austin Stacks did claim something from their game this weekend but it was only a share of the spoils as St Marys pounced right at the end for a scrambled Sean Cournane goal that gave them a surprise 1-13 to 2-10 draw. Although the South Kerry side had scored the first goal of the game through Daniel Daly, Pa McCarthy responded two minutes later from the penalty spot for the Rockies to give them an interval lead of 1-8 to 1-5. Stacks still looked good for victory at 1-12 to 1-6 but finished poorly as Denis Daly started the move that led to the dramatic last act of proceedings. Thee result incredibly still leaves Stacks in the relegation zone on three points as they venture down to Templenoe this weekend.

John Mitchels were just piped by point themselves away to An Ghaeltacht (0-11 to 0-10) in a bad weekend for the Tralee sides in general in the top flight.

The other match saw Dingle just get the better of Milltown/ Castlemaine at the Mid Kerry venue by 0-14 to 2-7 at a time when former South Kerry and Kenmare District manager John Galvin has joined the West Kerry club as a selector in Paul Fitzmaurice’s management team.

They host Glenbeigh/Glencar this weekend as Mitchels travel to Desmonds, St Marys host Rathmore and Milltown/Castlemaine make the trip out to An Ghaeltacht in the other fixtures.
