The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Division 1 crown for Scoil Mhuire, Killorglin

- BY TOMÁS Ó HAINIFEIN

LAST Wednesday in Ballymacelligott football field three of the Urban Allianz Cumann na mBunscol girls finals were decided. Thankfully the heavy rain cleared and though the surface was slippery we were treated to some fine individual performances and some top class team defending with scoring opportunities at a minimum.

The finals were well refereed by Gordon Keirns and with Austin Stacks Park now closed we are extremely grateful to the Ballymacelligott club for facilitating us for this year’s finals.

ALLIANZ CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL DIVISION 1 FINAL

IN the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Div. 1 Final Presentation, Listowel faced Scoil Mhuire, Killorglin in a gripping encounter with the result on the balance right up to the final whistle.

The Killorglin girls defended heroically in the dying minutes to deny the Listowel girls an equalising score to carry the game into extra time. Presentation Listowel led two points to one at the interval and though they had the lion’s share of possession they failed to convert this into scores.

Isabel Sheahan and Sasha Holly exchanged early points and Listowel appeared appeared well positioned to hang on but in a two minute spell this game was turned on its head with Scoil Mhuire full forward Aoife Cleary striking for two well taken goals to put her side ahead with ten minutes remaining.

Presentation Listowel, inspired by Megan Behan and Sasha Griffin who had a tremendous battle with Laura Leslie and Sara Leslie all through went in search of the winning goals. However, though they landed two points through Megan Behan they were unable to penetrate the defence for the all important goal.

Aisling O’Carroll did burst through and send a bullet like shot to the Scoil Mhuire net but her effort did not count as she had over carried much to the relief of Scoil Mhuire goalkeeper Adrija Rupsaite who produced some excellent saves for her school.

Airida Matevicute, Jade Costello and Eabha Dolan were outstanding during the final period and helped ensure the the 2017 title was heading to the banks of the Laune on a final score Scoil Mhuire 2-2 Presentation Listowel 0-5.
