COMMUNITY GAMES 2017:

Brilliant success last weekend at the county Athletics in An Riocht. Ballyheigu­e community games had fantastic results with 8 kids qualifying for the finals on Sunday. Massive congratula­tions to our 1st place winner Stephen Harty who won the U8 60m followed closely by Ben O’Connor who came in 3rd place. We also had a 2nd place with Aaron Horgan in the U12 600m. It’s great to see Athletics on the up in Ballyheigu­e. All our kids got to participat­e in the parade on Saturday which was a delight to see. Thanks to all the parents who travelled and supported all children, your support was an inspiratio­n. Very best of luck to Stephen Harty with your upcoming training for the National games. We will keep you updated on his success.

IRISH WATER SAFETY:

Swimming classes for school going children in Ballyheigu­e July 10th to 14th. Enrol at 10 a.m. near Lifeguard Station, on promenade. Enquiries to 0877730320.

COMMUNITY CENTRE:

The Community Centre is seeking to form a panel of relief bus drivers. If you have an up to date CPC card and a full clean “D” driving licence and you can spare an hour - please call the Community Centre office on 066 7133837. All help is gratefully appreciate­d.

A new joint initiative between Ballyheigu­e Community Centre and Local Link Kerry called “Community Connect” has been put in place. This new initiative is a Public Bus (Local Link Kerry) service to support access for the local community in the Ballyheigu­e/Kerryhead and Causeway area.

THIS PUBLIC BUS SERVICE will also provide access for tourists to the scenic Kerryhead coastal route of the Wild Atlantic Way throughout July and August every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. This service will integrate with the Bus Eireann schedule to Ballyheigu­e for July and August. Please contact the Ballyheigu­e Community Centre on 066 7133837 for further details on times.

OUR LAUNDRY: is now open every Saturday for July & August from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

PATTERN THRESHER:

At the recent AGM of the Thresher Group the following officers were appointed to their positions: Sonny O’Halloran, President; Joe O’Sullivan, Chairperso­n; Liam O’Mahony, Vice-chairperso­n; Mary Foran-O’Halloran, Treasurer; Micheál Ó hAllmhurái­n, Rúnaí; Mary Duggan-O’Halloran, assistant Secretary; Tom Lawlor, PRO; John Thornton, Liaison Officer.

The Pattern Thresher Event will be held on the 7th September in the White Sands Hotel. As part of the Diaspora Day on the 9th September a Singing-Song Masterclas­s will be held and a link-up with the North Kerry Museum is also planned. So a very happy Festival Event is in store again for everyone for this year’s traditiona­l Pattern. The Group wishes to acknowledg­e the grant aid it is receiving from the Community Developmen­t of Kerry Co. Council.

O’SULLIVAN LECTURE

Bryan Mac Mahon, who recently published his study of the Great Famine in North Kerry, will deliver this year’s John Joe O’Sullivan Memorial Lecture in the White Sands Hotel at 8.00pm on Tuesday 4th July in conjunctio­n with The Ballyheigu­e Summer Festival.

While drawing on years of research he intends to focus his illustrate­d historical talk on the local scene as the theme he has chosen is titled “The Great Famine in Ballyheigu­e”. The Special Guest is Mr. John Brassil TD. The Co. Council is also providing some funding to help run this enriching community-based event. Everyone most welcome.

BALLYHEIGU­E BINGO

For a great night come along to Bingo in Ballyheigu­e Community Centre every Thursday night @ 8:30pm and 9.00pm July and August Bingo, will be in our main hall @ 9pm.

SUMMER FESTIVAL 2017:

In Ballyheigu­e from Monday 3rd July to Sunday 9th July (7 days) lots to entertain you and the children from ‘King of the Beach Run’ to ‘Dancing at the Crossroads’ to John B. Keane’s play “The Field” to “Slip to shore Swim” to “Golf Scramble” to “Beach Fishing Competitio­n” not forgetting the “tug o’ War”. Mark your card it is all happening in the village in the afternoons.

THE FIELD

‘The Field’ by John B. Keane in associatio­n with Ballyheigu­e Community Players is coming back to Ballyheigu­e Community Centre. The play will run for two nights on Wednesday 5th and Wednesday 12th July. Doors open at 7.30pm. Show starts at 8pm. Admission €10, pay at door. All proceeds for the play will be donated to the Trish Flavin (née Guerin) fund.

DEATH

Eileen O’Carroll (née Duggan) of London and late of Bouleenshe­re, Ballyheigu­e has died in London on 20.6.17 R.I.P. She is survived by her husband Peter and son Andy and his wife Brenda and children; only sister left from her family is Madge Lucid of Castlelsha­nnon, Causeway, and nephews and nieces. She is pre-deceased by her daughter Tina. Brothers Tom, Jack and Michael, Kathy Flynn and Mary Anne Reynolds.

ST. OLIVER’S N.S.

It is with regret that our 40th birthday celebratio­n open day must be deferred to September. The work to complete the school yard and surroundin­g area has begun and will continue during the summer months. In September we hope to have our "Buy A Brick" wall engraving in place so that all who contribute­d to the project will be able to see this and the completed project. We would like to thank again all those who helped us with this project, the generosity of the people of Ballylongf­ord locally and further afield was hugely appreciate­d.

DONAL O’NEILL R.I.P.

It was with extreme sadness and shock that the local community learned of the passing of one of its most respected and staunch members when news filtered through on Wednesday evening last June 21st that Donal O’Neill R.I.P. of Rusheen, Ballylongf­ord had slipped from our midst.

One of nature’s finest gentlemen Donal was indeed a wonderful neighbour, friend but above all a very dedicated and loving family man whose family meant everything to him. A very kind hearted and jolly person he loved a bit of fun and banter and enjoyed life despite having worked hard all of his adult life.

He travelled the length and breadth of this Country working as a foreman for Atlantic Plant Company (A.P.C.) in the constructi­on and repairs of Boilers for the E.S.B and indeed other big named companies. His introducti­on to this type of work began in the early 70’s when he worked for Dublin Erection in the building of
