Walk in footsteps of Jamie raises over €70k for cancer charities
THE ANNUAL TREK HAS RAISED OVER €70,000 FOR CANCER CHARITIES
THE annual Jamie Wrenn memorial walk continues to go from strength to strength and to date the event has raised over €70,000 for local cancer charities.
This year’s walk, which took place on Saturday, was another tremendous success with a group of almost 150 people walking all the way from Tralee to Castlegregory to raise money for the Recovery Haven Cancer Support House.
On a gorgeous summer morning – which was a big and very welcome change from the dire weather that had hammered the county the day before – the walkers set from the Aqua Dome car park just after 10am.
En route to Castlegregory the group stopped for refreshments in Curaheen and the Junction Bar and on arrival in Castlegregory they enjoyed a barbecue and music at Maurice Fitzgerald’s bar.
For those who didn’t have the stamina to walk the entire distance and who needed to take a break from the 25k trek, a hop on/hop off bus accompanied the group.
The annual walk is held in memory of the late Jamie Wrenn who lost a brave battle with cancer in 2008.
Prior to his passing Jamie, a Castlegregory native, led an annual walk from his home place to Tralee in aid of cancer services.
Jamie started the annual walk in 1999, and he made a colourful sight as he led walkers from Castlegregory to Tralee with his horse and cart.
The yearly walk ceased when Jamie passed away but a few years later, in 2011, a group of his family and friends decided to revive the event.
This year’s walk was also dedicated to the memory of to another Castlegregory man, Mike Deane, who sadly passed away last March.
