Sun shines on Blennerville
SUPER SUNDAY AT THE PONY AND AGRICULTURAL SHOW
THERE’S no doubt but that when the sun decides to shine and the village of Blennerville gets to host its annual pony and agricultural show, everything suddenly feels right about summertime. This attitude was certainly reflected in the large crowd that descended on the village to make the most of a rare Sunday afternoon when umbrellas and wellies were the last thing on people’s minds. Image that!
This perennial favourite might have started out 38 years ago strictly as a pony show, but today the Blennnerville Show boasts of a broad appeal catering for the committed equine enthusiast and for people who are quite content just to enjoy a relaxing day out.
Trade stands are a major part of the show and extra space was needed this year so people could browse the many wares on offer. There was also a large selection of animal classes from poultry, sheep and horses.
“We were very pleased with it and thanks to the weather the crowds and gate were up which is always a great bonus,” said Tim Hurley, Chairman of the Blennerville Pony and Agricultural Show.
At last year’s show a special memorial cup was introduced to the winner of the ‘ Supreme Champion Pony’ event. The idea behind the cup is to rotate its honorary aspect every year and the 2017 honour was bestowed on the late Paddy Hurley as the cup was presented to the winner John Dineen from west Cork.
“I would say the entry of animals at this year’s show was also up which is due to the great work and preparation by the committee. The standards in animal entries are also up and we attract entries from all over Munster. First and foremost it’s a pony show, but we now put a huge emphasis on family entertainment which always goes down well,” Tim added.
