AMAZING CAMP BUT MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED

- By

IT’S been running for some 10 years now, and everyone who took part in the Action for Young People with Special Needs’ (AYPSN) three-week camp described it as a fantastic experience. But AYPSN Co-ordinator Tara Conway explained to The Kerryman that the initiative for teenagers with special needs depends on the spirit of volunteering and, ahead of future camps, she expressed a need for more people to come on board provide a helping hand.

“Our participants were between 10 and 20, and the camps, which moved between Killorglin, Killarney, Sneem and Milltown, allowed everyone to take part in exciting activities like sports days, frisbee workshops, discos, dancing and painting to mention but a few,” Ms Conway said.

“But, unfortunately, our volunteer numbers were down this year. All our attendees had a lovely time and everything went very well, but I would love if some more people got behind us for future camps as we also hold events at Halloween and Easter.”

The AYPSN committee comprises of parents and volunteers, and receives support of South Kerry Development Partnership, St. Francis’ School in Beaufort, The Family Resource Centre in Killorglin, KDYS, and St John of Gods. The summer, Halloween and Easter programmes provide an opportunity for young people with special needs to enjoy activities and workshops while they’re off school and have little or no social activity available to them, while also providing social opportunities in a fun and supportive setting and offering parents and carers much needed respite.

After three fun-filled weeks, the committee expressed their thanks to everyone who helps them raise funds and provides assistance that is crucial to its activities.

“Kathleen Morris of Killorglin Family Resource Centre was among those to thank all those who contribute to fundraising activities and especially SKDP and KETB for their financial assistance, and the committee, parents, volunteers and teenage buddies provide the project with invaluable support,” Ms Conway said.

“But getting more volunteers on board for these camps is a top priority for us right now. If you’re over the age of 13 and would like to be part of this wonderful initiative you can give me a phone call at (087) 436 4333 – whether you want to help with our Halloween camp or any future camps.

“The same goes for any of the teenagers who’d like to sign up to be part of the fun and games while they’re off school. You can give me a phone call for that, or if you’d like to avail of any further information on the AYPSN’s work.”
