All set for a threshing day out in Beaufort
FEW events capture the essence of tradition, entertainment and generosity quite like the annual Threshing Cancer Day at Gortnascarry, Beaufort which takes place on Sunday, September 24.
Brendan Ferris is the man behind the idea and it gives him – along with the many volunteers - enormous pleasure knowing Threshing Cancer raised over €111,000 for Kerry cancer support services since 2013.
Once again, the Threshing Cancer team are putting on a show for everyone: children’s events, novelty human football where teams of six will mimic and play ‘ table football style’ (this is a must see!), live music, arts, crafts and food stalls.
Vintage farm machinery is a major crowd puller and there will be a demonstration of an old sawmill dating between 1875 and 1915 that will be brought to life using an old steam engine; there will be five pre-1960 working display balers, and a horse threshing demo - to name but a few displays on the day. Flour making using ancient grain grinding methods will also tie in nicely with some old-style home baking.
The Threshing Cancer Day is now as much an educational pursuit as it is a fun one as it brings old farming practices to a new generation. It’s also a day that has earned a solid reputation for itself as a great family day out.
“We want to give people the opportunity to donate money to cancer and have a fun time. The day is a combination of fun and farming traditions which is the perfect blend. We’ve given away €111,000 for cancer charities, something we’re very proud of. We’re now in the final stages of preparation and we hope people will come along and support a great cause,” said Brendan.
