The Kerryman (North Kerry)

We’ll have to make do with darts as the GAA season closes

-

SIR, Another football season over – Gaelic of course, the handless game starts shortly.

Having being born in Roscommon, at least I got to take the flag out for an airing in the senior game this year. Then, as I am now in Kerry for 60 years, I got to fly the green and gold for a while. Sunday’s games – Kerry v. Derry and Mayo v. Dublin are all the news.

In the minor final all eyes were on young Clifford from Fossa, the new golden boy of Kerry football and it was a game where he shone out in style. In fact at half time the writing was well on the wall for Derry and while they tried their best to make a game of it they were never really there.

The senior game was a superb contest, decided by virtually the last kick of the game. Dublin were of course the victors and Mayo must somehow try to gather the spirit for a return next year.

While both games were very entertaining, the minor played a splendid game of running football in the traditional style rather than today’s basketball on the pitch.

As I have no interest at all in soccer so I will have to make do with watching the golf, darts, snooker, grand sumo and of course the chess season is starting on Monday 19th in the Castle Bar in Tralee. That will do I think –although there is also the poker league starting Friday night. Sincerely,

Michael O’Meara,

Faha, Killarney.
