Revelations on Culture Night in Scart

-

EVERYTHING you wanted to know about about the notion of erecting a monument to the last of the great fiddle masters in Scartaglin will be displayed exhibition style at the village heritage centre on this Friday night from 7pm.

People were capped and gowned for far less work than what PJ Teahan has put into this collection of memorabilia.

It’s all from newspaper research and about the proposal, creation, siting and unveiling of the monument to Patrick O’Keeffe on the village square in 1983.

The culmination of all the fundraising dances, collections and donations manifested itself in the unveiling of the monument by artist / sculptor Mike Kenny on an August night in ‘83.

The late Mr Kenny co-founded the Castleisland and District Culture and Heritage Society with local archaeologist Maggie Prendiville-Keane. Maggie will deliver a talk on the work on the O’Keeffe monument from papers and information which have only recently come to light.

The exhibition will be held in Scartaglin Heritage Centre immediately after the talks and ceremony at the monument - if the weather allows outdoor involvement.

Plan B is for the entire event to be held in the centre.

With revelation the theme of the occasion, the Handed Down programme of monthly events from now until next May will also see light as part of the night’s activity. And music? You say! Of course there’ll will be music.

In turn, the occasion is part and parcel of the Culture Night menu of entertainment which will sweep the country on the night.

The significant Scartaglin contribution will get under way at 7pm.
