The Kerryman (North Kerry)

North Kerry championship now just two weeks away NORTH KERRY GAA

- Mairead O’Sullivan

IT is that time of year again were the highlight of North Kerry football kicks off the Bernard O’Callaghan Senior Football Championship for the Eamon O’Donoghue Cup.

We have some great match-ups this year in the first round games. Will this Ballyduff team who seem to be hitting form at the right time of the year for the championship take the scalp of one of North Kerry’s top guns in Castleisland Desmonds who this year seem to be struggling to hit form due to injuries and work commitments?

Will Asdee or Knocknagoshel win the derby between two evenly matched teams? Well you will have to head to Jack Walsh Park to witness who will go forward to the quarter-finals. Or will the seasiders knock out last year’s finalises St Senans? Well Bob Stack Park is the venue for this exciting match up.

One of North Kerry most successful clubs in the North Kerry Championships history Ballylongford have been progressing nicely this year in county league, but is this game a step too far for this young side meeting last year’s winners Ballydonoghue in O’Rahilly Park?

Ballydonoghue won the Division 1 league final this year with ease brushing aside Desmonds and looked to be back to full form.

Another local derby will be the Myovane men up against Duagh in Con Brosnan Park. This one could be too tight to call. And one of the final meetings in the first round will see Finuge, who have a lot of young hurlers coming through, to meet the Brosna men.

This is a game that cannot be called for the neutral and should see one of North Kerry’s top teams leave the championship at this early stage.

We would like to wish all players and clubs the best of luck in this enthralling competition. Who will be the team to take the crown of North Kerry Champions for 2017? The North Kerry Football Board would like to thank Greg and Una Ryan of McMunns, Ballybunion for once again supporting this highly regarded competition.
