Crime drop was key to Purple flag

‘VISIBLE GARDA PRESENCE’ CENTRAL TO TRALEE’S SUCCESSFUL FLAG BID

- By SIMON BROUDER

A DROP in crime and a visible garda presence on the streets have been highlighted by the judges who recently awarded Tralee Purple Flag status.

The Purple Flag programme is a scheme, much like Blue Flags for beaches, that recognises towns and cities which offer visitors a quality, safe night out.

Last month – following a two year effort to win Purple Flag status for Tralee – it was announced that the county capital had secured the designation.

The key to Tralee’s successful bid was an inspection visit by two Purple Flag judges last July.

After their visit the judges were said to have been very impressed by the town and their report – published on Friday – shows that the all-out Tralee Chamber Alliance led effort to impress them was a success.

One area highlighted in the judges’ report was the “strong visible garda presence” on the streets during the adjudicators visit.

The drop in general crime and particularly in anti-social behaviour recorded in the last two years was also emphasised by the judges.

A strong taxi presence, the recommendation to pedestrianise The Mall and “bars buzzing with a happy customer base” were also among the key findings in the assessment report.

The judges said that Tralee is above standard when it comes to offering a broad appeal to visitors and locals with a vibrant choice and rich mix of offerings at night.

The formal presentation of the Purple Flag will take place at an award ceremony in Norwich, England in November.
