Serious concerns for welfare of missing man (47)

- By DÓNAL NOLAN

THERE are serious concerns for the welfare of a Kerry man who is the focus of a missing persons investigation for the second time in little over a month.

Ballylongford resident Barry Ahern was last seen in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, on Wednesday, October 4, and an appeal for information on his whereabouts was renewed on Tuesday, a fortnight after he was last seen.

The 47-year-old is described as 5ft 8inches in height, 11 stone in weight with short brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a hooded top and a pair of jeans when last seen in Mullingar on October 4.

Gardaí say they are seriously concerned for Mr Ahern’s welfare as the search enters its third week. As of Tuesday evening the investigation was still fully active with gardaí in Westmeath and Kerry appealing for information as they tried to pinpoint Mr Ahern’s whereabouts.

The Kerryman understands his family are deeply worried over his welfare given the length of time since he was last seen and the fact that Mr Ahern requires regular medication to manage a medical condition, which it is feared he is without while missing.

This is the second time in a little over a month that the Ballylongford man has been the subject of a missing persons search. Mr Ahern was reported missing last month when it was reported then that he had last been seen on Monday, September 11. An appeal for information issued, but was resolved when Mr Ahern was found safe and well in Cork, having travelled there from his Kerry home. Contact Mullingar Garda Station (044)9384000.
