Mercy Mounthawk out to take the healthy option

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

HEALTHY eating and exercise were the only items on the menu at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School last week, as the school welcomed a number of guest speakers as part of their Health Promotion Week.

The week was opened by West Kerry’s own Shane Finn, who spent time talking to students about decision making in the teenage years and the importance of physical activity.

Eimear Foley and Bernadette Gilroy from the IT Tralee also lent their services to the school as they discussed the importance of physical activity in your formative years and of the importance of correct posture.

“The students were very engaged with everything that went on during the week. They were busy asking questions and they seemed very interested in what the speakers had to say, especially Shane Finn,” said teacher, Bernie O’Shea, speaking to The Kerryman on Tuesday.

“Teenagers are of the ‘screen age’ you know, they’re humped over looking at screens all day, so she was teaching them about how they should be sitting and standing. The students were actually very interested in this topic. I’d say that some students had actually started to notice that maybe their owb posture wasn’t what it should be, so they were very interested,” she continued.

Students also took part in ‘ Torthaí Thursday’ where the benefits of fruit were outlined while a ‘Lunchbox Audit’ where fifth year students lunches were examined to see where they could improve, also took place.

“Torthaí Thursday was sponsored by Lidl and students got to sample all these different fruits,” she finished.

Bernie says that great thanks must to go to everyone who helped out with the week.
