Significant sum raised for Eamon Carey Fund
SUNDAY’S Eamon Carey Memorial Tractor/Truck Run raised a significant amount of money for its designated charity, Pieta House.
People have their own ways of quantifying the success or otherwise of events like this.
The Castleisland Co-Op Mart yard was covered fore and aft with vehicles of various vintages, all shining for the big day.
One boy declared it ‘awesome’ with his hands cupping his face. A man who’d know said that the turn out of machinery was ‘a terror – you wouldn’t see it at the ploughing.’
Pointing to an awe-inspiring example of tractorhood, another said ‘you wouldn’t go mad on the change out of a hundred grand for her – and she’s second-hand’ he said knowingly.
The late Eamon Carey need be in no doubt about the depth of his popularity or the the support network which gathered around this family and this charity event.
A estimated 140 vehicles faced the starter on the yard for the proposed 1pm start after a registration process which started at 11:30am on Sunday morning.
It took them the best part of half an hour to clear the yard when they got going and the vintage classes got a bit of a head start.
“We don’t know yet if it will become an annual event and that will be decided as time goes on.
“But a significant amount of money was raised on the day for the charity and there’s more to come in so we won’t have a final figure for a while,” said Joan Marie O’Shea of the organising committee.
“We would like to thank everyone who made the effort to take park on the day and all who helped out in any way. We’d like to include the mart in Castleisland for the use of the yard and to the gardai for their help and to Cunniffe’s Bar here in Currow,” said Ms O’Shea.
