COMMUNITY COUNCIL:
The recent lining of the Halla Inse Bán car park at front and rear has resulted in better use being made of the available parking space. The Community Council also has improved safety at the rear of the Halla with the erection of wooden fencing in recent times. The annual Sale of Work and Bazaar will be held as usual on the last Sunday in November
RAILWAY MEMORIES:
“The Limerick and Kerry Railway Twilight Years”, a book written by Liam O’Mahony and launched recently at Newcastle West Library contains many items of interest to Templeglantine people. Among the individuals mentioned is the late Denis Foley, the last employee on the 53 mile stretch from Ballingrane to Tralee, Denny Harnett of Barnagh Station and later Rathkeale, Mrs Browne, Devon Station, Mrs Magee and son Kevin of Devon Road station and later Ardagh, John and Bridie Sullivan, Tullig Level Crossing, Denny and Sarah Murphy, Barnagh, John and Nancy Horan, Sugarhill. The book tells us that 1963 was the last year in which Barnagh and Devon Road stations were open. We are told that it cost six shillings to travel from Barnagh to Listowel on the special train for the races in 1962 and from Devon Road it cost four shillings and three pence. I wonder are there many parishioners alive today who travelled on that train. The book is now available in the local shops and makes for very interesting reading.
