County minor crown for East Kerry after a classic
of people in urban areas and their immediate hinterlands that is contributing to this. A ‘middle of Kerry’ region as it has been termed at County Committee Meetings encompassing Killarney, Tralee and the traditional Mid Kerry district is becoming apparent in some ways.
The district sides in those areas are benefiting from this, but that does not mean that the traditional club sides can’t benefit as well from such shifts down the line. When you see a club like Firies on their own at this level it reflects such a shift and there’s nothing to stop a club around this ‘middle of Kerry’ area from doing so in the future particularly with the recent memory of Kilcummin’s 2010 success in mind.
Another reason as well why the divisional success rate at this level is higher compared to U-21 and Senior level is the divisional make-up to the strong County U-16 Championship that precedes Minor. It gives interested parties more incentive to stay within their own district come minor especially when the Minor County Leagues have clubs of similar ability competing against each other in competitive games by and large. Whether a switch to U-17 like inter-county level would change the dynamic in the success rate between clubs and districts is hard to say, but might well feed into the present review of district boards that is ongoing.
The spoils are with East Kerry for the moment however in so many ways. Despite Seamus Moynihan saying he wants time to assess whether he will travel further up with this side, you can guess he probably won’t be far away from it in the future.
