Nix glad to get over the line

- Timmy Sheehan

KERINS O’Rahillys joint-manager Morgan Nix was just glad to get over the line, but having been pushed all the way in a game which many felt they shouldn’t have been involved in he feels that there is an urgent need to review and reform the set up and the status of the Championship.

“We didn’t get off to the start we wanted. We knew Kilcummin would come tough and hard, and, they did. We made life hard for ourselves, we missed a lot of chances, from both frees and play. We dug deep in the second half then, I suppose David Moran came to the fore big time in the second half, a few others like Barry John (Keane), but it was tough all the way. You are in a game you don’t want to be playing in, it’s a funny feeling really, even when the final whistle goes, you don’t feel like cheering, or that, you won something, but we got the job done, and that’s what we needed to do today.

“It was dodgy all day, we were behind for a lot of the first half, but I think as it went through the second half, maybe, our bit of fitness in the last couple of weeks, and, our main players came to the fore, which put the scores over the bar when we needed it, but at all times the game was in the balance.

“This whole system of County Championship to take a team out of the Championship, I mean Club Championship. You play in the County Championship and then two weeks after you lose the semi-final by a point you have to tog out and play a game like this. I don’t think it’s fair to the clubs.

“I think the system needs to be looked at, I think there’s a Review Committee on the go at the moment looking at next year’s Championship, and I think the whole trap door system for clubs needs to be seriously looked at. The whole structure isn’t fair to clubs these days, and, I think clubs need to get together, and maybe voice their opinion more.

“I think Stacks were in the last game three years ago and none of us want to see other clubs in these positions. It’s just the way it’s going at the moment, but hopefully that will change in time.”
