Crokes go joint top with 12 titles
County Board PRO John O’Leary with all the GAA news
DR Crokes are Garveys Supervalu senior football champions for the 12th time following their two points victory (0-17 to 1-12) over a gallant South Kerry side at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Sunday evening last. They thus join both Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers at the top of the Championship Roll of Honour.
The victory was probably all the sweeter for the Killarney side given that they had to dig deep against a side that refused to throw in the towel and of course it must also be remembered that they had to play the last quarter without county player Johnny Buckley who was dismissed following a black card on top of the yellow he had picked up earlier.
After the game, Tim Murphy presented the Bishop Moynihan Cup to winning Dr Crokes captain Daithí Casey and Jim Garvey of Garveys Supervalu presented the Man of the Match to Gavin White of Dr Crokes who was the unanimous choice of the printed media correspondents covering the game.
Before the game, the Mid Kerry team, Kerry senior football team, county champions of 1992 were presented to the crowd.
Munster Club
FRESH from their county final victory on Sunday last Dr Crokes will put their All Ireland Club title on the line when they travel to Clonmel on Sunday to take on Clonmel Commercials in the Munster Club SFC quarter-final (2pm).
While it would be a huge surprise were the Kerry side to lose their crown, they will need little reminding of the giant killing act by the Tipperary side when they rocked Nemo Rangers with a late goal to clinch the Munster title in 2015.
Still, this Kerry side you would think are in a different league and they will be overwhelming favourites to go on to a semi-final meeting against Clondegad or Kilmurray-Ibrickane of Clare, a game that would be played in Killarney.
Relegation play-off
KERINS O’Rahillys maintained their proud senior football championship status with victory over Kilcummin in the senior football championship relegation play-off in the curtain raiser in Austin Stack Park on Sunday last (2-12 to 1-10).
The winners were a little fortunate to go to the half time break on level terms (1-4 each) and availed of a dominant third quarter to go four points clear. Kilcummin refused to wilt however and cut that deficit in half before a late goal confirmed that the Tralee side would be playing senior championship next season.
Kilcummin, meantime, will play in the Intermediate championship next year having been senior since 1998 which in itself was a remarkable achievement.
New Website
A NEW Kerry GAA website will be launched this Saturday.
Our aim at the design stage was to bring the website up to a modern standard rich in content and colour, and in particular to make the site mobile friendly given that a large percentage of the people log visit the site via mobile phones.
In the new site we have paid particular attention to fixtures / results and news items and we have introduced some new features such as the club locator. While many of the features of the old website have been retained it was not possible to retain all of them, and many of those that have been retained, such as the forum, have been relocated.
The new site is still very much a work in progress and we would welcome any suggestions on how to improve the site – constructive feed-back is always welcome. You may contact us at itofficer.kerry@ gaa.ie with your views.
