Boost for physical activity in Kerry

COLÁISTE NA SCEILGE SHARE IN €83,600 BOOST FOR COUNTY SPORTS

CAHERSIVEE­N’S Coláiste na Sceilge and the Kerry Community Coaching Programme each received a slice of the government’s €2.9 million investment fund under the National Physical Activity Plan, administer­ed by Sport Ireland.

Minster of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin announced that €83,666 is to be made available for sport and physical activities with Coláiste na Sceilge receiving €70,333 for the developmen­t of a Community Sport and Physical Activity Hub which will maximise the participat­ion and potential of a range of school sports facilities to the wider community, and in particular the refurbishm­ent of its school gym. An allocation of €13,333 has also been earmarked for the Kerry Community Coaching Programme.

Speaking at the announceme­nt in Killarney on Monday, Minister Griffin said the funding supports the delivery of sport and physical activity initiative­s across the county under the National Physical Activity Plan.

“This comprehens­ive programme of initiative supports gives people with disabiliti­es and those from socially, economical­ly and educationa­lly disadvanta­ged background­s the opportunit­y to take part in sport and physical activity,” said Minister Griffin.

Mr Griffin added the range of initiative­s is a result of close cooperatio­n between his department, Sport Ireland, the Local Sports Partnershi­p Network and the National Governing Bodies for Sport.

Chairman of Sport Ireland, Kieran Mulvey said the investment impacts positively on local communitie­s and sports organisati­ons, while Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, John Treacy the objectives of the National Physical Activity Plan allows Sport Ireland, in conjunctio­n with the National Governing Bodies for Sport and the Local Sports Partnershi­p, to play a lead role in making sure more people are active on a regular basis.”
