Castlegregory U16s pick up West Kerry Shield title
WEST KERRY U-16 SHIELD FINAL
An Ghaeltacht 0-7 Castlegregory 0-8
CASTLEGREGORY are the West Kerry U-16 Shield Champions after defeating An Ghaeltacht by a point in Lispole last Saturday.
An Ghaeltacht got off to a flying start with a Cathal Ó Beaglaoich point from a free kick and a point from play from Conn Ó Riagáin. Castlegregory responded with a point from a free kick from Conor Ó Laoire and another point from a free kick from Cian Ó Gráda. The score after 15 minutes was 0-3 to 0-2 to An Ghaeltacht.
Castlegregory’s Cian Ó Gráda levelled the game with a point from play and An Ghaeltacht keeper Tadhg Ó Murchú made a great save to deny Castlegregory a certain goal. Two more points from play from Castlegregory’s Cian Ó Gráda gave them a two point lead with 5 minutes left in the first half. An Ghaeltacht responded with a Cathal Ó Beaglaoich point from a free kick and a Conn Ó Riagáin point from play. When Referee Billy Lacy blew the whistle for halftime the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 0-5 to 0-5 Castlegregory.
Cathal Ó Beaglaoich opened the scoring in the second half with a point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht to put them one up. Castlegregory responded with a Cian Ó Gráda point from a free kick to level the game after 10 minutes played in the second half. Adam Mac Coisteala put Castlegregory one ahead with a point from play. The score after 15 minutes played in the second half was An Ghaeltacht 0-6 to 0-7 Castlegregory.
Castlegregory keeper Eoin Ó Cinnéide made a couple of good saves to deny An Ghaeltacht and another Cian Ó Gráda point from a free kick gave them a two point lead with around 5 minutes to play. An Ghaeltacht rallied and a Conn Ó Riagáin point from play left them only one behind. An Ghaeltacht went in search of the equalising score but some great defensive play by Castlegregory kept them at bay.
Chairperson of Bórd na nÓg Chiarraí Thiar, Edward Corkery presented the West Kerry U-16 Shield to joint Captains of the victorious Castlegregory Team Eoin Ó Cinnéide and Fionn Ó Cuileannáin and presented the Man of the Match Award to Adam Costello of the Castlegregory team.
