The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Legendary John Egan DVD launched

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

JUNE 17 will long be remembered as a day when Sneem and the wider GAA family honoured a player considered by many to be the greatest forward in a glorious era of Kerry football. A bronze statue of John Egan today takes pride of place in the late Kerry maestro’s home village and thanks to Christy Riordan the special ceremony is now available on DVD.

It contains over two hours of brilliant footage capturing a memorable event in which greats from the GAA world converged on Sneem. GAA pundit Marty Morrissey interviews legends like Mick O’Dwyer, Pat Spillane, Eoin Liston, Jimmy Deenihan, Ger O’Keeffe, Matt Connor, Niall Cahalane, and Seamus Derby – who presented the ball from the famous 1982 All-Ireland football final, in which John was Kerry captain, to his family on the day.

Thousands of people turned up on what was a sun-drenched day in summer and this unique atmosphere is also captured, while the footage is interspersed with action from John’s playing days in the green-and-gold. A collage of memorable newspaper headlines and extracts from a very rare interview John did with Weeshie Fogerty are also included.

“John was a very shy man and extracts of the interview with Weeshie really work well with the footage of what was a memorable day. It’s lovely to hear John’s voice in the DVD which contains over 40 interviews,” said Christy Riordan of CR Videos.

“We had five cameras there on the day so we were able to give it great coverage. It took many hours and months of editing and it’s presented by Weeshie Fogerty. It’s an all-in-one file of John’s life and career and the DVD is now a piece of Kerry GAA history,” he added.

For anyone interested in buying the DVD in time for Christmas, contact Christy Riordan on 087 922 6284, or Sneem GAA Club.
