62 groups ‘celebrate’ €264k funds
MINISTER ANNOUNCES FUNDING OF €16K+ TOTAL FOR ‘OLDER’ GROUPS
THE Department of Tourism and Sport claim that 62 groups in Kerry are now ‘celebrating’ funding that will see them each receiving the grand total of €264.
Minister Brendan Griffin last week announced funding of nearly €300,000 nationally for clubs and groups promoting activities for older citizens under the Go for Life Grant scheme.
Of the €300,000, Kerry is to receive €16,370 - shared among 62 older groups from Men’s Sheds to Active Retirement Groups, Local Sports Partnerships, Family Resource Centres and more.
“A total of 62 groups in Kerry are celebrating the awarding of grants to fund physical activity for older people,” a spokesperson for the Department of Tourism and Sport claimed.
“The Go for Life Grant Scheme from Age and Opportunity and Sport Ireland is awarding over €16,370 to groups around Kerry, and nationwide grants totalling almost €300,000.” If divvied equally among the 62 groups in Kerry it will see each receiving €264. While the groups will no doubt be only too happy to receive the money, it’s not clear if any of them are actively celebrating it.
The grants will be used to underpin the vital work of the organisations in what the department describes as ‘improving the health and wellbeing of older people across the country by providing them with opportunities to engage in physical activity and sport.’
‘Over the last seventeen years the National Grant Scheme funding has supported and empowered thousands of groups of older people to get more active more often and the record number of applications this year shows the continued importance of the scheme for groups throughout the country,” Minister Griffin said.
