Mag and Niamh on Sudan mercy mission

-

CASTLEISLAND natives and Bon Secours Hospital staff members, Mag Cotter and Niamh Prendiville held a Sudan Appeal Bake Sale at St. John’s Hall in Castleisland on Saturday night December 9th.

The women are part of a two dozen strong party of health specialists from the Tralee based hospital preparing to fly out to the war ravaged region of northern Sudan on the days immediately after Christmas.

Their post Christmas cargo will benefit up to 2,500 children there as their peers in the Castleisland area have been assembling folders of goodies for them over the past few weeks.

The folders include colouring books and little gifts and Kelloggs have rowed in behind the idea.

The breakfast cereal giants have given them a huge quantity of their Kelloggs Cúl Camp gear which they usually present to the GAA camps here.

Civil war and disputes over the divided country’s rich, natural resources have taken political precedence.

“Our visit to Sudan has been well flagged there and people are travelling over long distances already at the news of the medical camps we’ll be setting up there. They have no hope of ever getting medical treatment for themselves or for their children because of the situation in the country,” said Mag.

The travelling team will include 12 nurses and three doctors as well as cardiologists, physiotherapists and administrative staff members. It will be all hands on deck as they open the ‘pop-up’ clinics during their stay from December 27 to January 5.

Mag can be contacted on: 087 75 68 557 and Niamh on: 086 39 07 670.
