Killorglin go back to back with win over Ballincollig
NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
KS Killorglin 91 Ballincollig 74
THERE was a real top of the table clash in Killorglin Sports Complex last Sunday when first played second, with Keanes Supervalu Killorglin hosting Ballincollig. Killorglin went into this game unbeaten while Ballincollig had only one loss this year, which was to their neighbours Fr Matthews.
Killorglin looked like they were really up for this game during their warm up and so it proved, as they came out of the blocks at full speed, and scored 10 points without reply. The first quarter belonged to American player Kevin Grey, who was to contribute 20 of Killorglin’s first quarter score of 30 points.
Killorglin held a 14-point lead half way through the quarter but Ballincollig fought back to within a point. However, Killorglin retained momentum and pulled away again, with the highlight scores being a slam dunk by Ivan Bogdanovic and a three pointer on the buzzer from Kevin Grey. The first quarter score was Killorglin 30 Ballincollig 18.
The second quarter started a bit slower than the first and it took nearly two minutes for either team to register a score. A technical was called on Ivan Bogdanovic, when he protested a little too much about a decision. Ciaran O’Sullivan made a lay up for Ballincollig but Killorglin immediately replied via a back door pass that wouldn’t be out of place in the NBA from Ian McLaughlin, Daniel Jokubaitis finishing for the score. Killorgli led by 10 points, 46-36, at half time.
Ballincollig opened the third with a three pointer by Ciaran O’Sullivan but Killorglin immediately replied with a three of their own, from the ever green Declan Wall. The two teams then went score for score for a period with the most noteworthy moment being a huge block by Ivan Bogdanovic and from the resulting fast break, Darragh Jones finished the move with an easy lay up, and got fouled in the process and made the bonus point from the free throw line.
Keanes finished the quarter with a steal and score from Daniel Jokubaitis to leave them ahead 66 to 55 at the end of the third.
Ballincollig came out for the 4th quarter looking for a quick start and they got it when Ciaran O’Sullivan got inside the Killorglin defence he made the score and was fouled by Declan Wall in the process and made the free throw. However, Killorglin responded with yet another three pointer from Kevin Grey, with Killorglin running out comfortable winners.
