CG take down Tralee Dynamos

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP THIRD ROUND

Tralee Dynamos 0 CG Killarney 2

CG Killarney took a major scalp at Mounthawk Park on Sunday with an historic win over Tralee Dynamos in a very entertaining game played at a lively pace.

The game was scheduled for Cahermoneen but as this pitch was unplayable it was transferred to the all weather pitch at Mounthawk Park.

Admittedly Dynamos are going through a transition period this season but that did not detract from CG’s great win and they were full value for it.

Both sides kept the ball on the deck as often as they could, producing spells of attractive passing football with plenty of creativity but both sides just could not put that final pass together when it came to scoring chances.

CG’s Hubert Dziediec, could have easily bagged a hat trick as he missed a few great chances but eventually he redeemed himself admirably as he was the provider of the goal that set his team up for victory and he played a key role in the other goal as well

Both goalies had very little to do during the game and it looked for a long time that it would progress to extra time and possibly a penalty shoot out.

It took two late goals to win the game for CG but they were good value for it as they turned in a storming second half performance and if their finishing had been better they could have won much more convincingly.

The first half produced a litany of corner kicks but neither side could translate them on to the scoreboard and as time wore on both sides got frustrated leading to a lot of free kicks.

CG forced three early corner kicks which yielded nothing while Dynamos put a few attacks together but they were well handled by the CG defence.

Dynamos got a free kick in a good position in the 10th minute but Shane Lowth’s effort missed the target.

CG put a free flowing move together in the 26th minute with Joe Hurley providing the final pass for Hubert Dziediec but just as he was about to pull the trigger Dynamos keeper Gary Sugrue smothered the ball at his feet and got it to safety.

Then Sam Dziediec showed some fancy footwork to get past a couple of defenders and he offloaded to Mike Murphy but he could only find the side netting from close range.

By now Dynamos were putting good attacks together with the Lowth brothers Shane and Darragh very much involved but up front everything was breaking down as they just did not have the capacity to penetrate a rock solid CG Killarney defence.

Joe Hurley had a chance for CG in the 37th minute but he drove it over the top while down the other end a bending shot from distance by Shane Lowth was a reasonably easy enough save for CG keeepr Dave Keirns.

CG upped their game considerably at the start of the second half and began to ask serious questions of the Dynamos rearguard. They had two great chances to take the lead but John Foley blasted a Frank Cronin cross over the bar from less that 10 yards, and then Hubert Dziediec couldn’t finish a James McCarrick pass from five yards with the goal at his mercy.

They squandered another great chance in the 60th minute when Dziediec played in Joe Donovan but he completely missed the ball with the open gaping goals in front of him.

Then a James McCarrick free kick found Hubert Dziediec at the near post but he could not find the target from five yards and by now it now it looked as it was not going to be CG’s day.

However that all changed in the 84th minute when Hubert Dziediec delivered a great cross to John Foley who controlled the ball beautifully and picked his spot from 10 yards firing low to the bottom corner.

It was game set and match shortly afterwards after a great run by John Foley unhinged the Dynamos defence and he fed Hubert Dziediec and his shot was turned into his own net by a Dynamos defender.

It was an excellent all round performance by CG with their defence excellently marshalled by Mike Murphy, Joe Hurley, Joe Donovan and James McCarrick were pulling the strings at midfield while Hubert Dziediec and John Foley were a constant threat up front.

CG are now at home to Limerick side Janesboro in the last 32 and that will be a very big day for the club.

Speaking after the game CG manager Darragh O’Regan said he was delighted with the win which he said was a huge morale booster for a small club.

“This is our first year playing in the Munster Junior Cup and we are thrilled to be getting such a great run in it. We came into the Dynamos game with a match plan having watched our opponents last week and it worked to perfection.

“I cannot talk highly enough regarding my panel of players they show such great commitment, train hard and fight hard for the cause. We have played 20 games already this season between friendlies and competitive games and this win is one of the biggest club highlights since the formation of the club.”
