Rathmore Social Action sets its sights on 2018
AS one year closes a new one brings with it an opportunity to reflect and plan ahead for a new year with ambition and vision. One organisation who are relentless in their pursuit of all things ambitious is Rathmore Social Action Group who are busy preparing for 2018 and the next stage of redevelopment at the Presentation Sisters Convent in Rathmore where they hope to construct four more houses for vulnerable people in the community.
Stage one of this magnificent project is complete and the emphasis is now on providing four additional units which would be two-bedroom houses on the grounds of the old convent. Initially, over €1.2 million was raised for stage one of the convent development and Rathmore is now awaiting notification from the department on whether or not it will sanction a grant worth €600,000 which would get the ball rolling on completing what has been an amazing adventure for a small community with limited resources.
“We’re hoping they will sanction the grant as we’ve worked hard on the initial stages of this project and we would hope our request is heard. We’re finding that there is once again a shortage of houses for people in the area,” said Jeremiah O’Donoghue, Chairman of Rathmore Social Action Group.
The Rathmore Social Action Group comprises of over 40 students and some adult tutors. The group has a brilliant track record when it comes to community based projects and initiatives and the Presentation Convent redevelopment will be one of many that will stand as a lasting reminder of their effort in the years to come.
“We’re always looking for volunteers and new members to join us so people should get involved. It’s a fantastic social organisation and to be part of a group working to improve and make their community better is a special feeling,” Jeremiah added.
