Tis the season to be walking...

THE annual New Year’s Day walk in Rathmore is now one of the most eagerly awaited social gatherings of the year as people like to shake off those New Year’s Eve cobwebs while enjoying a stroll in the great outdoors and a chance to raise a few bob for some very worthy charities and local organisations.

2018 promises to be no exception as people will have the option of participating in two walks or a climb on the Paps Mountains. There will also be lots of spot prizes and hampers up for grabs afterwards at The Bridge Bar where walkers can enjoy some food and light refreshments.

The 2018 walk is in memory of local man Gary O’Leary who died suddenly. Gary was extremely well liked in the locality and he kindly drove one of the buses each year that ferried walkers to their rendezvous points. Walkers will this year have the chance to raise some money for the Irish Heart Foundation and the Rathmore Social Action Group.

People can meet at The Bridge Bar, Rathmore on January 1st where registration takes place at 11:30am. The buses will be leaving at 12:30pm for the walk from Clonkeen Church to the Bridge Bar which is about 8 miles. A group will be heading up to Shrone in the Paps Mountains for a climb, while there will also be a 5k Family Walk for people with young children, or perhaps older people who just want to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

“We’ve been doing this walk for years now and every year we pick a charity. It’s a great event and by staging two walks and a climb, it gives people of all ages and levels of fitness a chance to partake in a great day out,” said organiser, Denis Desmond.

“I want to thank all the bus drivers who provide their services on the day free of charge. Thanks also to Brendan Dennehy for sponsoring the posters, while all the spot prizes and food is all sponsored locally,” he added.

Registration is just €10 and the day is a great way of getting out there for some fresh air and to have a chat about all those New Year’s resolutions you’ve made!
