NORTH KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Ballydonoghue Senior team who had a convincing win over near-neighbours, Ballyduff on Sunday last to capture the Eamon O’Donoghue Cup in a two-in-a-row victory for the parish.

A huge crowd turned out to support both teams in very unfavourable weather in Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel, which was in great condition, considering the amount of rain which fell overnight. Darragh Sheehy was presented with the Man of the Match trophy, a well-deserved accolade for the goal-scorer.

COMMUNITY ALERT ADVICE:

The local branch of Community Alert met last week. Concerns were again raised about the increase in road traffic incidents and the number of people out walking at dusk without any reflective clothing. It is appealing to all walkers, whether committed or casual, to make a habit of wearing reflective vest/jacket at all times, day or night. These are free and can be picked up at the shop/Post Office at Ryan’s Daybreak, Lisselton, as well as any Garda Station.

During the run-up to Christmas, the committee remind you to be vigilant due to the ever-increasing number of telephone scammers endeavouring to obtain personal information from you. Please be aware that one should never divulge any personal details over the phone. Legitimate businesses will not, under any circumstances ask for PIN numbers, Passwords, PPS number, Credit Card and Bank Account numbers, etc over the phone. Calls from numbers beginning with +222, +235, +248, +674 and +676 are amongst a long list of fraudulent calls. Advice is to not answer and under no circumstances should one re-dial the numbers. Please make everybody in the household aware of these numbers. Copying the numbers on to a card placed in a prominent place in the house is advisable to remind everybody of the on-going dangers.

In recent weeks, bogus callers have tried to gain access to households on the pretence of representing Kerry Co Co and Revenue Commissioners. Nobody will ever cold-call from any legitimate Government Office. They will call only by appointment. Don’t be fooled into thinking anybody calls to give you back money for anything. Too good to be true generally means that it is just that. If you are even slightly suspicious of anything contact Gardaí on 06821000.068/27104.

Continuing on from her winning of the DR H H Stewart Medical Scholarship in Occupational Therapy recently, Deirdre O’Connor, Glouria, was awarded another scholarship, the Quercus College Scholarship in Occupational Therapy at a ceremony in UCC during the week. Marissa Molyneaux, Ballyegan, past pupil of St Joseph’s, Ballybunion, was awarded a scholarship from UL recently. Congratulations to both girls. The young people of Ballydonoghue are certainly making their mark in the world.
