Who is consultant blamed for current hospital scanning crisis?

-

THE Consultant Radiologist at the centre of the ongoing scan crisis at University Hospital Kerry was a locum who was hired on a temporary basis in March 2016.

The doctor – who is on the specialist register maintained by the Irish Medical Council – has been a medical professional since the mid 1990s.

They had previously worked in several other hospitals in Ireland, the UK and Canada.

The consultant worked in Dublin’s Mater Hospital from June 1996 to July 1997 and again in January and February of 2006.

The HSE has said no issues have arisen with regard to the consultant’s work while employed at the Mater hospital.

According to the HSE, the Irish Medical Council is the body responsible for contacting the relevant hospitals in the UK and Canada to inform them of the current investigation.

Though it has been reported that the consultant was hired to work at UHK via an Irish locum agency, senior HSE Management told The Kerryman that the doctor had not been employed through an agency and that the individual had made a personal application seeking employment.

HSE management said the consultant’s CV and their apparent level of experience had given those involved in the hiring process no cause for suspicion.
