Painting a path toward a safer future on our roads
IT was a memorable day for twelve talented primary school students this week, as their superb artistic skills won them a place in a calendar that’s sure to be up in most houses around Kerry in the New Year – and it’s all in support of a worthy message.
The students visited the County Chambers this week to meet with Senior Council Engineer David Doyle, Cathaoirleach John Sheahan, and many more, in celebration of next year’s Kerry County Council Road Safety Calendar. Each student received a copy of the 2018 Calendar, while Councillor Sheahan presented individual prizes and the Kerry-Limerick Road Safety Authority’s Eileen Cunningham bestowing road safety packs.
Each student sent pictures with road safety messages, trumping high-quality competition. The winning dozen was made up of Rebecca Flavin, Tarbert National School (January); Marie Keane, Dromclough National School (February); Eimear Finn, Lissivigeen National School, (March); Caoilfhinn Donovan, Scoil Treasa Naofa, Kilflynn (April); Patricija Pudzemyte, Scoil Saidhbhín, Caherciveen (May); Odhran McDonagh, Scoil Dar Earca, Valentia (June); Clare Ní Allarúin, Bunscoil an Chlochair, Dingle (July); Darren Reardon, Scoil Bhréanainn, Portmagee (August); Julie O’Sullivan, Scoil Náisiúnta Cillín Liath, Mastergeeha (September); Sam Power, Castlegregory National School (October); Donnacha Horgan, Scoil Naomh Erc, Glenderry, Ballyheigue (November); and Tom O’Flaherty, Ardfert National School (December).
“We had over 400 entries from schools around Kerry,” event co-ordinator Michelle Mullane said. “It is my hope that each pupil who took part will have an increased awareness of road safety as a result”.
