Crokes win pulsating finale

THE Credit Union County League Division 1 Final was played last Sunday at Lewis Road, Killarney.

The outstanding saves made by Dr Crokes’ goalkeeper Shane Murphy and also watching Marc Ó Sé and Colm Cooper marking each other were two particular highlights of the game.

Kieran O’Leary got the opening point of the game for Dr Crokes, An Ghaeltacht quickly equalised but shortly afterwards Micheál Burns hit the back of the net putting Dr Crokes 1-1 to 0-1 ahead.

From here on, Dr Crokes never relinquished their lead. Seán Ó Bambaire netted for An Ghaeltacht on the 17th minute bringing the score to 1-5 to 1-1 in Dr Crokes’ favour.

The reply from the Crokes was another goal, this time from the hands of Paul Clarke. At half time it was 2-8 to 1-5. The second half lost some of the energy and drive showed in the first half. However An Ghaeltacht added a further five points to their tally and were denied two certain goal chances due to the skill of goalkeeper Shane Murphy. Dr Crokes also added five further points in the second half, two of which came from Man of the Match Brian Looney. The game ended Dr Crokes 2-13, An Ghaeltacht 1-10. The Shield was presented to Dr Crokes’ captain Daithi Casey by Christy Killeen, Kerry County Board Cultural Officer. The Credit Union sponsored Man of the Match Trophy was also presented by Christy Killeen to deserving winner Brian Looney. Referee for the game was Padraig O’Sullivan, Firies. Our thanks to the Dr Crokes club for producing the match programme and for providing us with excellent facilities. Dr Crokes has finished the season on a very positive note and has an exemplary record in this year’s Division 1 of the Credit Union County League.

For An Ghaeltacht the training continues and we wish them well in their Intermediate semi-final in January.

AIB Intermediate Club Semi-final

ALL roads lead to Portlaoise for this fixture on January 21 at 2pm. An Ghaeltacht will play Moy Tír na nÓg of Tyrone, the club of Colm and Seán Cavanagh. The other semi-final is between Michael Glaveys, Roscommon, and Kilanerin, Wexford and that game will be played in O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Kerry Lights Up!

THE GAA, in partnership with RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, is seeking to bring together communities across Kerry to enjoy healthy walks in the safe, bright, environs of their GAA club.

In a bid to make exercise more accessible on the dark winter nights, ‘Kerry Lights Up’ will see participating clubs turn on their floodlights/lighting systems between 7-pm-9pm each Monday for a six-week period (January 22 – February 26, 2018) as Operation Transformation returns to our screens in the New Year.

Each Monday, club and community members will be invited to come together at participating clubs to walk off the Christmas excess, catch up with their neighbours, and banish the winter blues. (Walking is proven to benefit both our physical and mental health.)

GAA clubs are already becoming hubs for health through the Healthy Clubs Project, with at least one Healthy Club in each county. During the six-week period Operation Transformation cameras will visit a selection of participating clubs across the series, with all clubs encouraged to capture their stories via videos and images for use on the show, GAA.ie, and RTE’s various platforms.

Clubs that complete the registration process and adhere to the necessary criteria will be covered by GIW’s insurance for all walk leaders and participants. Closing date for submission is December 31 at 5pm. Please contact Bernie Reen for further information. To participate -

The club can decide (and promote to its members and communities) what time between 7pm-9pm each Monday the lights will be turned on.

GAA Super Games Centre

TRALEE CBS has been chosen as Super Games Centres.

These centres are based all over the country and were set up to reduce youth drop out and encourage “play to stay” for those aged between 12 and 17 where youth drop out is most prevalent. Sky Sports is supporting the GAA Super Games Centres and will be providing Tralee CBS with kits and equipment.

Speaking about the GAA Super Games Centres, Pat Daly, GAA Director of Games Development & Research, said: “We know that youth drop out is the biggest worldwide problem in this sector.

“The GAA Super Games Centres encourage a “play to stay” approach. GAA Super Games Centres provide informal playing opportunities of a developmental nature, where a strong emphasis is placed on a player-centred and learner-led approach to development.

“We’re delighted this year to have Sky Sports involved. Our ultimate goal is to increase the number of centres countrywide and reach over 3,500 children annually.”
