Haughey briefed on ‘lying’ jarveys

-

CHARLES Haughey was personally briefed about the activities of ‘ lying’ jarveys in Killarney who were allegedly conning visitors to Muckross House.

Prior to his high-profile visit to Killarney in late December 1987 Mr Haughey was provided with a detailed briefing on various matters in south Kerry.

This included details of plans to widen the road and re-locate one of the car parks at the historic house and gardens.

This decision – made on health and safety grounds – was taken due to complaints about the behaviour of some of the jarveys who were working in the area at the time.

“The commissioners (of Public Works) receive many complaints each year from visitors claiming to have been misled by the jarveys into believing that the only entrance to the park is the Main Gate, and thence on foot or by jaunting car to Muckross House, whereas vehicular access is available at the Muckross Gate entrance,” the briefing notes explain.

“It is therefore proposed, from a safety and park management viewpoint, to re-locate the car park behind the gate lodge at the main entrance within the park.”

“Clear signposting will be erected early next year to advise visitors that motorised vehicles have access to the park at the Muckross House entrance. Also Killarney Urban District Council will erect and information board relating to the park in Killarney town.”
