Benny braves icy conditions as fish season opens up

-

THERE ain’t nothing going to keep some lads from their beloved fishing grounds, as demonstrated by Benny Loughnane this week as he marched into the heart of Storm Emma with salmon season opening on the Feale on Thursday, March 1. Benny is photographed behind Tea Lane, taken on Friday by Michael Guerin. “Benny said on Thursday it was so cold that as he was winding in the line the water was freezing on the runners of the fishing rod,” Michael reported.

“On Friday, he was the only fisherman on the river, using big juicy blue head worms, but not a bite. Benny thinks the main reason is that the fish stock is very low and that the river is low in water at the moment, plus very cold. In years gone by he would have up to six salmon caught on the first few days.”
