The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Friday airing for BBC One show about John Twiss

AN email from Lorna Hartnett from Chalkboard TV – the company which made the documentary on the hanging of John Twiss – confirms that the series Murder, Mystery and My Family is now being run on BBC One. Ms Hartnett, who discovered the ‘John Twiss story’ on the Michael O’Donohoe Memorial Heritage Project almost 12 months ago, made the initial contact with project co-ordinator, Janet Murphy, last summer. Ms Hartnett also confirmed that the episode on the John Twiss case will be screened on Friday, March 9, 2018, at 9.15am on BBC One.

“The entire production team at Chalkboard TV would like to thank the members of the public locally and in various parts of Cork and Kerry for their contributions to the making of the programme.

“As I’m sure you are aware, not every scene, location or person that we have filmed within the course of production will be featured in the final 45-minute programme, but everyone’s contribution is greatly appreciated nonetheless,” said Ms Hartnett.

The series will air daily on the BBC at 9.15am from Monday to Friday for two weeks from Monday, 26 February, and all episodes will be available on the BBC iPlayer.

“There is always a chance that the order of episodes could be changed at the last minute, although this is unlikely, so do keep an eye on the BBC website or television listings,” she advised. The synopsis states: “A man is dragged from his bed and beaten by two men. With serious injuries and a gunshot to his arm, he is discovered early the next morning. His neighbour calls for a priest and a doctor, but it is too late – James Donovan has been murdered. With little evidence, the police round up several known criminals from the surrounding area, and John Twiss from Kerry, over 16 miles from the murder scene, is tried and convicted. He is hanged in February 1895, protesting his innocence.”
