The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Looks at some of the stories making backpage news over the past seven days

- Damian Stack

LAST weekend’s weather played havoc with the fixtures schedule as all Allianz League games, football and hurling, were postponed.

The football game between and Dublin and Kerry will now go ahead on Sunday at 4pm in Croke Park. Tickets purchased last week are of course valid for Sunday’s game. Tickets are priced at €15 for adults and €5 for children under 16. There is a 20% discount on tickets purchased before midnight on Saturday.

At the moment we are in fourth position on the division 1 table behind Dublin, Galway and Monaghan and ahead of Donegal, Tyrone and Mayo who are all on 2 points and bottom of the table is Kildare who as of yet haven’t registered points. In terms of upcoming games, we are away to Dublin, home to Kildare and away to Tyrone.

Credit Union County League

The launch of Credit Union County Leagues scheduled for last Thursday was postponed but it will be rescheduled for a night in the near future and on the night presentations will be made to Dr Crokes, Killarney Legion, Na Gaeil, Keel, Cordal, Ballyduff, Glenbeigh/Glencar and St Brendan’s College Killarney.

Referee Training

THE Referees committee had to cancel the Referees Foundation Course scheduled for last Friday night in Austin Stack Park.

It has been rescheduled for next Friday night March 9 at 8pm in Austin Stack Park. The Referees committee will also be holding the first night in St. Mary’s Caherciveen GAA Grounds on Friday night.

Referees who have already done the course but couldn’t make the Refresher Course may also attend in Caherciveen. The course will last for 1.5 hours each night and you must attend both nights.

It was with great sadness and regret that we heard the news on Tuesday last that Jerry Brosnan of Moyvane had passed away. Up to the time of his passing Jerry was President of the Kerry GAA Supporters Club and was a member since it was formed almost 30 years ago.

There was no journey too long or too short for Jerry to attend whether it was an underage game within the county or with the Kerry teams in Donegal or Dublin. He was there!! Jerry enjoyed the social side of those weekends away.

He was the first to start a song and the last to finish in the early hours of the morning. On the way home on the bus from those long overnight trips Jerry would make his way from his familiar back seat to the front of the bus and would say “give me that thing there” (meaning the microphone) and start the sing song singing about six songs in-a-row. His likes will never be seen again ‘Jerry thanks for all the great memories’.

The Supporters Club and the GAA world send their sincere sympathy to his wife Nodie, son Mike, daughters Kay, Brenda, Aileen and Geraldine, daughter in law Breda, sons in law Tom, John, David and Aidan and his grandchildren. May the sod rest lightly on his soul.

HURLING BY TOMMY O’CONNOR

FOLLOWING the postponement of all G.A.A. games last weekend, the Kerry senior hurlers will be away to Westmeath on this Sunday, 11 March in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 2A. Venue is Cusack Park, Mullingar, at 1pm.

Westmeath lead the Division 2A table with 8 points from 4 games. Kerry and Carlow are level on 6 points each but Kerry has a superior point’s difference. Meath remain on 4 points after 4 games. Kildare and London, who meet in the last round are still pointless. The top two teams after this weekend’s series of games will contest the Final.
